It is always recommended to trim the candle wick before lighting the candle but why?
Here’s the reason why trimming the wick to 1/4th inch is very important for candle overall care.
Trimming the wick each time before lighting not only produces a cleaner burn, but is also safe. Untrimmed wick cause larger/higher flames; Higher flames cause the candle holders to overheat; and overheated candle holders lead to cracked glass jars.
Longer wick also burn faster, which then causes a shorter candle burn time. Trimming the wicks each time before lighting can also prevent black soot build-up. The formation of carbon soot also affects the smell of the candle.
WHEN is the best time to trim the candle wick?
It is highly recommended to trim the wick BEFORE each use. If you forget to trim after lighting the wick, you can blow out the flame, wait for it to cool and carefully trim the wick.
HOW to trim the wick of a candle?
You can trim out your candle wick with small scissors, but if you want to be extra fancy, there are different types of wick trimmers available on the market. Again, it is always best and safest to trim the wicks when they are at room temperature.
It is generally recommended that the wick is to be trimmed at least about 1/4 inch in length. And always clean up any soot built in the candle, we don't want them in our wax when we light the candle.
And as a general rule, if you have about 1/2 inch of wax left in the bottom of the jar/glass, it's time to replace them with the new candle.
